The National Cycling Centre - "The Velodrome"

AHC has, in its formative years, completed many projects from small public-house refurbishments to major hospital, hotel, commercial, school and sports stadium developments. The company has completed projects with many major contractors, top architectural practices have taken advantage of its services, and AHC has also been previously approved as independent hardware consultant to London Underground Ltd.

In Manchester, AHC was called in to assist AMEC Building in the procurement of ironmongery and ancillaries for the new National Cycling Velodrome. Amec project co-ordinator Tony Hearns said: "As the project progressed and the client requirements were clarified, AHC was appointed and able to visit premises of various door manufacturers to co-ordinate ironmongery with door sizes, weights, stile widths, and usage."

Working with the architect’s door schedules, a final ironmongery schedule was drawn up, to enable Amec to obtain competitive prices through the services of AHC. Hearns explains: " This process was carried out efficiently and quickly, enabling a wide choice of ironmongery to be selected from various manufacturers for Amex and clients consideration."

A sample board was made available, the ironmongery choice agreed and orders placed with the successful tenderer. "The expertise, early research and attention to detail demonstrated by AHC enabled a trouble-free installation — a very worthwhile exercise given the difficulties that can sometimes be encountered at the critical stages of any contract," concluded Hearns. "Amec Building will certainly be looking at using AHC on future projects."

		The new UK Headquarters for Adidas UK Ltd. was one of the first major projects completed by AHC. The architect, RA Fisk and Associates, of Swinton, Manchester, realised at a very early stage the advantages of using an independent company to complete the ironmongery schedules as an open specification. At the practice's request, a specification was written using 'Hewi' hardware and competitive prices were obtained from a number of suppliers. The project was completed with AHC acting as liaison for the architect in all matters relating to ironmongery/ hardware.
